A Backyard Tropical Resort in Ipswich, QLD
A good garden makeover shouldn’t just look finished on the day the last plant goes in. It should continue looking better as the landscape establishes.
That was particularly important for this Ipswich garden transformation, where the goal was to rejuvenate several areas of the property and create a cleaner, more consistent tropical resort-style landscape.
The existing pool garden already had mature palms worth retaining, but the planting beneath them had become tired and needed a rethink. Other garden beds along the fence lines also needed stronger structure so the different areas around the property felt connected.
Rather than treating each garden bed as a separate job, we approached the property as one landscape.
Refreshing the Pool Garden

The established palms provided the perfect framework for the pool area, so there was no reason to remove them simply for the sake of starting again.
Instead, the unwanted underplanting was removed and replaced with a simpler tropical planting palette.
Hot Rio Nights Heliconias were introduced for their strong tropical foliage, with Casuarina ‘Cousin It’ used as a contrasting lower-growing plant.
Importantly, the plants weren’t packed tightly together for an artificially full result on day one. Their mature size was considered during the layout, leaving enough room for each plant to establish and develop naturally.
The garden was then finished with timber-look metal edging, prepared soil, appropriate fertiliser, natural mulch and feature river rocks.
The result is a pool garden that feels cleaner and more deliberate while still retaining the mature palms that were already working well in the space.
Creating Structure Along the Fence Lines
The fence-line gardens needed a different approach.
Sky Pencil Hollies were used to introduce a strong vertical element and create repetition throughout the property.

In the rear garden, Eremophila ‘Silver Ball’ was incorporated between the Sky Pencils to introduce contrast in shape and foliage. The front fence garden was kept more restrained, using the Sky Pencils by themselves for a cleaner and more formal appearance.
Garden edging, soil preparation, fertiliser, mulch and decorative river rock were carried through these areas so the landscaping felt consistent rather than pieced together over time.
New turf was also installed through the rear section to complete the makeover.
Designing the Garden for the Future
One of the biggest considerations in this Ipswich landscaping project was resisting the temptation to overplant.
Freshly installed gardens can look slightly open while the plants are young. Filling every available gap can make the garden look impressive immediately, but it can also lead to overcrowding, additional pruning and unnecessary maintenance once those plants reach maturity.
By allowing enough room for future growth, the garden has space to become fuller naturally.
The Finished Ipswich Garden
What had previously felt like several separate garden areas now reads as one cohesive landscape.

The established palms remain the centrepiece of the pool garden, while tropical planting, structured fence-line gardens, edging, mulch, feature stone and new turf give the property a much more intentional finish.
It’s a good example of how an Ipswich garden makeover can work with existing features rather than automatically replacing everything.
