Why preparation matters

The part you cannot see decides the part you can

Most failed lawns were laid onto ground that was never properly prepared.

Turf rolled straight onto compacted clay or builder's fill looks excellent for a fortnight and then goes backwards. Roots cannot get down, water sits on the surface, and no amount of watering afterwards fixes it.

Removing the old surface, levelling, and laying proper underlay is what determines whether the lawn is still good in a year. It is also the first thing quoted out of a job when someone is competing on price.

Common questions

What people ask about new turf

Can’t see your question? Call Lou’s on 0424 890 129.

Do you prepare the ground before laying new turf?
Yes. Proper preparation is one of the most important parts of turf installation. Depending on the site this may include removing existing vegetation, earthworks, levelling, installing turf underlay and preparing the final surface before the turf is laid.
Can you help me choose the right turf variety?
Yes. We consider sunlight, intended use, maintenance requirements, soil conditions and the appearance you are looking for before recommending a suitable variety.
What time of year is best for laying turf?
Turf can be installed throughout much of the year in Queensland provided adequate water is available. Warmer growing conditions generally help the turf establish more quickly.
How much watering does new turf need?
New turf requires consistent watering during establishment. Ongoing watering is normally the client's responsibility unless otherwise included in the quotation, and we provide guidance on the initial watering requirements.
How long before I can walk on or mow the new lawn?
It depends on the turf variety, weather conditions and how quickly the roots establish. Traffic should be kept to a minimum initially, and the first mow should only be carried out once the turf has rooted sufficiently.
Do you renovate existing lawns as well as install new turf?
Yes. Depending on the condition of the existing lawn, we can provide renovation services such as scalping, aeration, top dressing and fertilising.
